Los Angeles Times Reports West Hollywood Antiques Dealer Allegedly Sold Fake Picasso   by Aaron Wilmont

In a story which originall appeared in the highly respected and followed Los Angeles Times newspaper, January 8, 2010, under the Headline: West Hollywood antiques dealer accused of selling fake Picasso for $2 million. My-Thuan Tran wrote the story about the owner of Chateau Allegre gallery on La Cienega Boulevard, 69-year-old Tatiana Khan.
It has been alleged that Khan hired an artist to produce a 1902 pastel drawing by Picasso called “La Femme Au Chapeau Blue,” or “The Woman in the Blue Hat.”
A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court on Thursday allegedly that Khan told the artist that the real Picasso painting had been stolen from a client of Khan’s and that the dealer needed a replica to be used in a trick to catch the thief. It is not clear at this time to what extent the Attorney General will get involved as there was no actual personal injury present in this case.
The complaint alleged also that soon after Khan sold the drawing for $2 million. Khan claimed that the painting came from the Malcolm Forbes family estate.
The buyer became suspicious and contacted a Picasso expert. The expert judged the drawing to be a fake. In 2009, The FBI was called into look into the case.
The article in the Los Angeles Times reported that when Khan was contacted by the FBI, the complaint alleged, the gallery owner told the artist not to reveal that she had created the fake Picasso.
In an interview with FBI agents, she said she obtained the drawing from a cosmetologist as collateral for a loan.
The Times piece also said that the complaint charges Khan with wire fraud, making false statements to the FBI and witness tampering.
